[glow=red,2,300]Casino Royale Production Diary #4[/glow]
14th February 2006
Czech Republic Shooting
On Monday 30th January 2006, when filming began, the first scenes where Daniel Craig played James Bond involved an intense fight. According to an AFP report, the brutal scrap takes place inside the Liberian Embassy where Bond has to fight off several goons. Misha Olexova, Stillking Films marketing chief confirmed, "it was an action scene, a very tough fight". Two days later, the first shots of a bloodied and bruised Craig in 007-attire were leaked by Getty Images.
Shooting continued in the Czech Republic this week, with action taking place at the Strahov Monastery.
The monastery encompasses a 770 square meter large area, which is now being occupied entirely by the production. The area has been transformed with tents, trailers, make up rooms and production offices by the British company Translux. The filming is taking place inside the building, in the monastery's famous library.
The scene itself has been kept top-secret and despite intense interest from the press, no information has leaked in recent media reports. Since the film "lensed" on 30th January, details of the filming has been kept relatively under wraps (although the Latino Review website blew the plot wide open in a recent script review).
Following complaints from local residents over the level of noise and traffic generated by the production, local government reportedly imposed conditions on the filmmakers in an attempt to come to a working compromise. Local mayor Petr Hana told reporters this week that the people who were complaining "should be proud that that James Bond raises the area's reputation".
Another councilor, Martin Salek, added that the production was only based in the vicinity of the monastery for a short time, and that they got paid a fee of 250 Euros a day - which was a welcome additional income for the administrative department.
Filming in and around the Modrany film studio is expected to wrap this week, with the production to move next to the German border region and the spa town of Karlovy Vary. Location work will also take place at Loket Castle, 15 km from the town and 135 km from Prague.
Shooting Schedule
Casino Royale production will shift to the Bahamas in a few days, and will then move on to Italy, return to the Czech Republic in March for major studio work in Barrandov, and then finally relocate to Pinewood Studios in England for two weeks with principal photography scheduled to wrap in July.
Location Watch
Albany House, a secluded and magical estate nestled in the Southwest corner of New Providence in the Bahamas, has the honour of being the first location to be used for several scenes.
The art department will be based in Coral Harbour on New Providence Island, and are already in the process of transforming local beachfront properties and dressing sets - one of which is a facade of a large ocean-view building. Areas of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force facility has been taken over with production trailers and large cranes.
A popular hotel in the Bahamas is about to be transformed into the Liberian Embassy in Madagascar — a perplexing development considering Madagascar's location off the coast of Africa. The Buena Vista, a 200-year-old mansion with a legendary restaurant, will double for a location in Casino Royale.
Produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (Eon Productions) and directed by Martin Campbell, CASINO ROYALE is scheduled for release November 17, 2006. Principal photography started on January 30th 2006, with locations in the UK, Czech Republic (Prague), Italy, and the Bahamas. It will be British actor Daniel Craig’s first outing as James Bond. He is the sixth actor to play the 007 role in the franchise.
