AsThat's What I Call Music 60 hits the shops, we take a nostalgic look back at long-running compilation albums.
THE Now That's What I Call Music compilation albums have featured on Christmas and birthday wish lists for generations of music lovers.
Now the music institution has reached its 60th edition, after more than 80million album sales.
While the first edition kicked off with Phil Collins, Culture Club, Duran Duran und Kajagoogoo, Now 60 will feature the dance beats of the Chemical Brothers and The Scissor Sisters as well as modern solo stars such as Gwen Stefani and Joss Stone.
The franchise was started way back in 1983 by music industry giants EMI and Virgin Records, who brought together the best of their artists in a compilation for the first time.
Prior to that, there had been no contemporary collections of pop songs, other than the odd genre specific K-Tel offerings, and the music executives thought there might be a market for a modern chart selection.
The name was inspired by a bizarre poster advertising Danish farm produce, which Virgin boss Simon Draper loved. It showed a pig listening to a chicken singing a song while laying an egg and, in appreciation of the tune, the pop pig says in a cartoon speech bubble, 'Now, that's what I call music'.
The poster was reproduced on the back cover of the first album and was the reason behind the rock and roll pig mascot who featured on most of the early records - replaced in modern times by ever flashier graphics.
While it started off as only EMI and Virgin acts, it has expanded to include artists from other labels. Though some acts have never been included - there has never been a Madonna song and only one Michael Jackson record, Farewell My Summer Love.
Now That's What I Call Music 60 is out on March 21, until then, take a trip down memory lane with this selection of Now track listings from the last two decades.
