DURAN DURAN LIVE 8
BAND CONFIRMED AS BOB GELDOF LAUNCHES
LIVE 8 - 'THE LONG WALK TO JUSTICE'
Pop legends DURAN DURAN have today (Thursday 30th June) confirmed some twenty years on, they will once again join Bob Geldof and a host of the world's biggest rock and pop stars to perform at LIVE 8 on July 2nd 2005.
DURAN DURAN who are currently on their “Astronaut” European tour, will break off from the tour on the 2nd July to perform in Rome at the Circus Maximus venue. They will join the likes of U2, Coldplay, REM, Madonna, Elton John, Sting, Annie Lennox, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams, Jay Z, Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Joss Stone and the Scissor Sisters to unite for LIVE 8 with 60 other artists in five countries!
LIVE 8 will be held on the 2nd July 2005, with five simultaneous free concerts featuring the cream of international rock and pop artists performing in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome and Philadelphia. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend events with billions more watching the global broadcasts. The purpose of these concerts are not aimed at raising money for charity, but to engage worldwide attention and a global media focus on the critical decisions to be made by the G8 summit leaders four days later in Gleneagles Scotland.
Historic venues have been selected with London's glorious Hyde Park, the monumental Eiffel Tower in Paris, the symbolic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the staggering Circus Maximus in Rome and Philadelphia's Cradle Of America and Live Aid City from 1985.
Bob Geldof said, “The leaders and mayors of the world's greatest cities, major corporations and organisations and rock stars have all shown what can be done when people are determined to work together and are prepared to make personal sacrifices to achieve the greater good. Let's hope the G8 leaders will follow their example. The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if millions of people show them that enough is enough! We understand precisely what must be done to free the weak, the hungry and the sick from the awful, needless, condition of their lives. Now is the time to do it!”
Commenting on LIVE 8, Simon Le Bon said; “We are delighted to be involved with Bob and LIVE 8 and in helping to tilt the world on its axis and play a small part in making history once again. We hope the leaders of the G8 Summit will sit up and listen to this call to action and to what Bob has to say, both he and Bono have tirelessly campaigned on poverty issues for many years and have made a real difference, they have had the power to make these people sit up and listen. When we were involved in Live Aid twenty years ago, nobody could have foreseen or predicted what an impact this would have had on the world, its now time for us all to pick up our instruments and make a contribution once again with LIVE 8!”
John Taylor added: “To be involved in Live 8 is as important, if not more important than the original Live Aid, twenty years on and the message still hasn't been heard by the worlds richest nations. Live Aid was one of the most unforgettable and poignant moments in history yet there is still global poverty. The leaders of the G8 can make a difference and it's up to them to make poverty history!”
DURAN DURAN are currently mid way through their “Astronaut” European tour, by the end of the tour they will have performed to in excess of 500,000 fans. Duran Duran will return to the UK in December where they will perform two UK arena show's at Earls Court on the 21st December and Manchester's MEN Arena on the 18th December.
