Jakarta, Indonesia-Relief – The World Economic Forum’s Disaster Relief Network (DRN) announced that it has completed shipment of 500 of Lifeline radio receiver to Aceh. The solar cell AM/FM/SW radio donated by Freeplay Foundation, with contribution from Duran Duran, and will be distributed by Mercy Corps and Radio 68H.
DRN support the shipment as requested by Freeplay Foundation, South African NGO specializing in promoting the importance of radio as a vital communication medium in the developing world. DRN asked China Ocean Shipping Commpany (COSCO) to bring the radio from Johannesburg to Banda Aceh.
According to GlobalGiving, Freeplay planned to provide 1,000 radios for Aceh to help Radio 68H, Jakarta based NGO specializing in radio broadcasting, in providing communication media for tsunami survivors. In March, Duran Duran donates $4000 through GlobalGiving to help Freeplay raised its tsunami fund target of $50,000.
Lifeline radios, DRN said, are easy to use, receive excellent AM/FM/SW reception and play for many hours on wind-up energy or solar power. Mercy Corps will distribute the radios to staff and survivors in remote locations providing them access to broadcast updates about public health concerns, reconstruction activities and aid programmes operating in the area.© dil

Duran Duran Donate Tsunami Relief Funds to GlobalGiving and the Freeplay Foundation
For Release 28 March 2005...In an inventive approach to charitable giving, Duran Duran are donating $4,000 raised at auction for a soccer ball signed by more than two dozen celebrities. The band is donating the proceeds to the Freeplay Foundation via the GlobalGiving charity fundraising network. As a member of GlobalGiving's 2005 Tsunami Relief Fund, the Freeplay Foundation is working to assist tsunami survivors in the Aceh province of Indonesia.
Founding band member Nick Rhodes led the Duran Duran Celebrity Soccer Ball drive to get signatures from an impressive cross-section of musicians, actors, and other celebrities from both sides of the Atlantic. The band placed the ball on eBay's auction site on 7 March 2005.
The Freeplay Foundation provides wind-up, solar-powered Lifeline radios to people in the poorest, most isolated regions of the world. The radios will provide thousands of displaced tsunami survivors living in temporary camps with vital news and information that will help them access aid services, reconnect with their loved ones, and recover from the trauma as they re-build their lives and communities.
GlobalGiving allows individuals to locate and donate directly to locally-run social and environmental projects worldwide. The tsunami relief fund was created as a means of directly supporting grassroots relief efforts in the devastated region of Southeast Asia.
