[glow=red,2,300] Stars in their eyes (w. John Taylor)[/glow] Today's musicians praise their artistic role models By David Lindquist david.lindquist@indystar.comJohn Taylor on Bernard Edwards
"Duran Duran's John Taylor didn't consider the bass guitar to be cool until he heard the playing of Chic's Bernard Edwards. Although British teenager Taylor aspired to be a punk in the tradition of the Sex Pistols and the Clash, he also connected with landmark disco tracks such as "Le Freak" and "Good Times" by Chic. "It didn't make any sense, given what I was into," Taylor said. "But I was hearing these records and saying, 'I like that.' My friends thought I was mad." Duran Duran's rhythm section took shape when Taylor put away his six-string guitar to play bass in tandem with drummer Roger Taylor. "In a way, it was my ham-fisted suburban white adolescent attempt at (Edwards') kind of sophistication," Taylor said. "It gave me my style. It was a punk energy, but attempting to play like an R&B master." Edwards died in 1996, succumbing to pneumonia while on tour in Japan."
