"Iam so very happy to have received such overwhelming support surrounding recent events & from so many people, simple individual messages of a personal nature, and at a time when from at least my perspective, tacky, manipulative, media grandstanding seemed so inappropriate and so tasteless - So massive thanks for your sobering & constructive words & thoughts.
God forbid that the public should ever be enlightened to the actuality thru' the media - sadly fact checking went out with freedom of speech - however when you have an audience of mature adults, who are still affectionately referred to as Duranies (I came up with that name by the way) but who are no longer teenagers, then the spewing out of misleading information is just plain stupid, do you actually believe everything you read? Please, I hope not! And that's why I refuse to deal with the common media for this purpose and have chosen a more direct route to communicate with the core audience.
I guess in reaching out to you, what I am attempting to do is define the type of relationship I would prefer to have with the audience for the future - If you don't like me music, then the rest is irrelevant" - Surely, after over 25-years in the public eye, you know what we are all about by now. For sure when we were younger a lot was based on petulance & obsession, when your finding out about how far you can push yourself & what you are truly capable of. Nevertheless my career is no longer driven by such uncertainly or insecurity's, which is where I feel I differ from others, & Iam really not obsessed with acquiring a new, younger (without whom we cannot get on MTV) audience, because Iam quite happy with the lot we have, old, young or in denial & unless Iam mistaken we have had our fair share of MTV plays, quite seriously more than most.
I find the whole notion that you are frozen in some pubescent bubble completely ridiculous, hanging onto every-word we say as if it were some kind of cult, I have had literally hundreds of regular letters & e-mail's, from regular boys & girls recently, and I can honestly say, (and you can check on the Studio Myspace) that none of these have been what you could refer to as as awkward or obsessive fan mail, just of positive support, not that I want you to stop loving us (and Iam sure when I meet Lennon in Heaven they'll need angels to take me away), however it's definitely not 1986 & all our hormones have changed, bugger me they really do calm down!!!
I mean lets be frank, we don't dye our hair these days because we want it a special color, no, its simply to hide the grey bits, that's of course if you've still got your hair - But for sure... "I'd rather have it grey than it go away" So I still dye & shades are so much more practical than make-up!!!
I was always told as a young man that this would all go away on day, and that pop music careers were short, temperamental & ultimately self-destructive, I often remind myself and my family that we are the 1 in a-million that beat those odds. Yes, with both luck & good judgment, but it was the songs that put us where we are, so there is a theory that if you can at least refresh that relationship with your audience, then they may, not always, but may, keep listening. (SEE: Myspace/ Andy Taylor Studios Ibiza to hear 4-new tracks)
Anyway, for the moment Iam absorbed in music, its coming out of my ears (well where else) so I genuinely feel that I have a lot of great work to come, and I certainly don't need a team of pseudo intellects to motivate that process within me, or to wipe I disagree at every turn. You see... Eventually you realise that its down to you, the individual, yeah the one that's become arrogant & lazy.
Way to much credence is given to the "hidden depth" in our profession - when in actual fact it was about 5-horny teenagers, of dubious sexual persuasion, who sometimes shopped at women's clothes stores & wore make-up. Not that I've ever dabbled, but when I look at the 1981 scrap book I can't help but questioning what I was thinking, and then I stop thinking & get on with the day... Have a good one.
And a very special thanks to all the girls at the site for keeping this alive for nearly 10-years.
