biography
Born Thomas Connery in the Fountainbridge district of Edinburgh, Scotland on August 25, 1930.
the child of Joseph and Euphamia Connery, grew up in one of the poorest areas in Edinburgh; the majority of the population had 6 people living in the one room and had to share sleeping areas and bathrooms. Who would have thought Sean Connery was to become a rich and successful actor, playing some of the most famous roles in film history.
In his teenage years, he took on many jobs, from brick laying to cement mixing and even polishing coffins! At seventeen he joined the Royal Navy, but was discharged three years later due to an ulcer. While attending the 1950 Mr. Universe contest, it was suggested to him by another competitor, that he try out for the chorus of "South Pacific", he got the job which gained him a lot of experience, he then decided that he wanted to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry.
His first Television performance was in 1956 starring in the production of "Relquiem for a Heavyweight" due to his success in that production, he took on a number of other parts for television. In 1957 he signed on a Contract with 20th Century Fox, starring in many films including "Another Time, Another Place", "On The Fiddle" and a small part in "The Longest Day", he then obtained a release from his contract.
After Connery had a mention along with many other actors in the London Express, he received a telephone call from Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzmen who asked him to attend a job interview, he was immediately signed into a long term contract.
During the production of You Only Live Twice, Connery became frustrated by the constant mobbing he had to endure from the Japanese media. As a result he requested to become a full producing partner of further Bond films or he would leave the role. His request was denied and he decided to leave the role, after production of You Only Live Twice was complete.
After the production of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the President of United Artists thought it crucial that he play the next role and offered him a record-breaking salary. This salary was large enough to put him in The Guinness Book of Records. After taking a week to decide, he accepted the offer and starred as James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. Several years later in 1983 he starred as James Bond in the non-Broccoli Never Say Never Again.
Connery has become one of the few actors to maintain an on screen stature for over thirty years.
