Timothy Dalton
biography
Timothy Dalton was born in Colwyn Bay, Wales on March 21, 1944. Though Welsh-born, he is of British, Italian, and Irish ancestry. His mother is from the Bronx (New York)USA.
Timothy Dalton, the son of a talented English advertising executive, was the eldest of his five siblings. At age 16 he had decided on an acting career after attending his first play - a production of 'Macbeth'. He had attended school in both Manchester and Belper where he joined the dramatic society. He was invited to join the National Youth Theatre in 1964, where he made his first appearance playing a small role in Shakespear's "Coriolanus" at Queen's Theater in London. As a result Dalton decided that he would attend the "Royal Academy of Arts", he was there for two years but claimed he had learned nothing.
In 1966 Dalton appeared in his first lead role as Malcolm in the production of "Little Malcolm and his Struggle against the Eunuchs" which led to a contract with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He had made his motion picture debut, starring in the Oscar-winning production of "The Lion in Winter", as King Phillip of France. After that he starred as leading roles in several plays back in Birmingham. He then starred in his second film "Cromwell".
In 1968 Albert Broccoli asked Dalton if he would be interested in taking over the role of James Bond after Sean Connery, but he later said "I considered myself too young and Connery too good". Dalton wanted a bit of variety so he alternated between film, television and stage productions.
He starred in the film "War and Peace" then the stage production of "Five Finger Exercise" and his first modern film "The Voyeurs". His first major starring role was in the film "Wuthering Heights". Then followed BBC television productions "Candida" and "The Three Princes". Dalton's next film was "Mary, Queen of Scots", then at 24 years of age, he decided to turn down any film roles and simply stick to stage productions, in hope he would become a more experienced and mature actor.
In the mid-seventies, Dalton felt it was time to return to cinema after discovering that there was no money around on stage any more. He then had a supporting part in the film "Agatha" then a leading role in the Hollywood produced "Sextette". For a while he stayed in the US, to star in several television roles before returning to London for the filming of "Flash Gordon". During the filming of the movie Dalton was asked to test out for the role of 007, but because of his role in "Flash Gordon" he was prevented from auditioning.
As well as some more stage roles Dalton also starred in the films "The Doctor and The Devils", followed by "Brenda Starr" starring Brooke Sheilds. Dalton's first big break as James Bond occurred when Pierce Brosnan was kept from taking on the role due to a contract starring in "Remington Steele". Dalton tested out for his role as 007 in two scenes from "On her Majesty's Secret Service", he was offered the part and took two weeks to accept. After he re-watched all of the previous films and re-read all of Fleming's books, it was officially announced on August 7, 1986, that Dalton was the new James Bond.
Production of "The Living Daylights" began in September of that year, and a week later Dalton was introduced as James Bond at a big press conference in Vienna. Dalton took his role of 007 very seriously, he seemed to bring back the more realistic character of Bond from the early Fleming books and in the production of Licence to Kill, writers made several adaptations to the script, to suit his style of acting. In 1990, Dalton decided to hand in his role as James Bond.
