Pierce Brosnan
biography
Pierce Brendan Brosnan was born in Navan, County Meath, Ireland on May 16, 1953. He moved with his family to London in 1964 [apparently on the very same day that Ian Fleming died ]
Brosnan did not enter his role as James Bond as instantaneously as Sean Connery or George Lazenby, but it was more a case of fate or one bizarre audition. He remembered back to when he saw his first Bond movie at the age of 10, Goldfinger, he said "When I was growing up in Ireland, we had no Cinema or TV. I went to London with my parents and they took me to see a movie. I remember seeing a naked lady covered in gold paint, and a man who killed with his hat". That first movie is probably what got Pierce involved in James Bond later in his life.
At sixteen he was working in South London as a commercial artist, drawing furniture. Bored with that job, he often went to the Oval House Theatre Club and became involved with their productions. He also worked some other odd jobs, including a fire-eater at a circus! After a while Brosnan decided on some formal acting training at the Drama Centre in London.
After graduating he got a job as an acting assistant stage manager at York Theatre Royal, quickly he distinguished himself. Within six months, he was selected by playwright Tennessee Williams to create the role of McCabe in the British Premier of "Red Devil Battery sign". Brosnan used that role to trigger off many other theatre roles until he made a small appearance in a number of British television productions. Brosnan starred in his first major television role in the docudrama "Murphy's Stroke". His first film debut was starring in "The Long Good Friday" as an IRA assassin.
His next role was a non-speaking part in the film "The Mirror Crack'd", ironically for some of the filming he was directed by Guy Hamilton, who directed a number of Bond films. Shortly after that Brosnan's girlfriend Cassandra Harris was cast as Countess Lisl in "For Your Eyes Only", it seemed that he was heading in the direction of James Bond. During the shooting of For Your Eyes Only, he visited his girlfriend in Corfu, to watch her play the part. It was reported that Albert Broccoli, said "if he can act.... he's my guy" to take over the Role of James Bond when Roger Moore retired.
When in Corfu, Brosnan received the script for "The Mansions of America", when he returned to England he was given the role. Late that year after he married Cassandra Harris and decided he would take the opportunity to introduce himself to Hollywood personally. So he went to the bank and convinced the manager to give him and his a few grand so they could get to Los Angeles.
While in LA, he and Harris had dinner at the home of Albert Broccoli, after leaving they were driving back to their hotel and Brosnan said jokingly "My name is Bond. James Bond". After Anthony Andrews turned down the role of "Remington Steele", he went in and snatched it, starring as a suave, sophisticated private investigator. He had then given himself quite a name throughout America. In a review from The Washington Post it was mentioned that Brosnan could make a young James Bond. In October 1983 in US Magazine readers were asked to vote who they think should be the next James Bond, he won by a mile. In 1984 it was reported that he had signed a secret deal with Albert Broccoli to play the fourth James Bond.
Brosnan almost missed his role as 007 because the ratings of "Remington Steele" were going down, but due to publicity, the ratings shot back up again into the top 10 and production of the show was continued. Due to the fact that Albert Broccoli did not want to share his Bond actor with another network, he was forced to look for another Bond, Timothy Dalton. Unfortunately the show only lasted a few more episodes until it folded. His role as 007 seemed a runaway, he was offered a role to star in the NBC mini series, "Nobel House" which eventually won him an Golden Globe nomination.
He had starred in many movie roles until a break in his acting career, his wife Cassandra was dying of cancer, He spent the rest of his wife's time looking after their children, sadly in 1991, Brosnan's wife died. In the early nineties, he starred in several films including "The Lawnmower Man" and "Mrs. Doubtfire". During the production of another film in New Guinea Brosnan received a telephone call from Albert Broccoli who offered him the part as James Bond, he took the offer. Due to legal problems with film production, Goldeneye was not released until six years after Licence to Kill. Goldeneye was the highest grossing Bond film ever, and it spawned two MTV generation films: "Tomorrow Never Dies" and "The World Is Not Enough", although the latter put more focus on character rather than TND's almost non-stop action.
Bond fever, almost akin to the 60's, surrounds the latest installment "Die Another Day" - which is predicted to smash the box office records yet again. Brosnan has stated his wish to do a fifth, the producers have backed him for as long as he wants the role, and he is currently quoting six movies as his ultimate target - to equal Connery.
