DAME Judi Dench has let slip a top secret - the identity of the actor who will play the lead in the next James Bond film.
And the name is Brosnan ... Pierce Brosnan, says the actress who plays spy chief M in the movies.
Dame Judi said: "Despite the fact that everyone on the face of the earth has been tested as his possible replacement, Pierce will be doing it again. It will be announced come summer."
Brosnan, 51, had earlier been ruled out by production company Eon for the part he has played four times after allegedly demanding a huge pay rise. With a reported £20million asking price, he was thought to be too expensive - as well as too old.
Younger British actors Clive Owen, Daniel Craig and Dougray Scott - and Australian Julian McMahon, star of TV's Nip/Tuck - had all been tipped to play Bond in a remake of Casino Royale.
Craig had denied being offered a three-film deal, though he said of being linked to the Bond role: "It's not a bad position to be in, so I'm not complaining. But there's really nothing to say as yet. I don't know what the deal is."
But Hollywood industry newspaper Variety recently reported Eon had "patched things up" with Brosnan.
Producers were said to be negotiating a two-film deal worth £22million or a single film while a younger actor was groomed to take over.
Yet despite Dame Judi's comments, the Mirror understands Brosnan is yet to sign up for the new movie.
His Bond films have been box-office hits, averaging £200million takings with his last, Die Another Day, netting a record £236million.
The Irish actor had spoken of his pain at being cast out, saying: "Losing Bond hurt me like mad. It was a shock, painful and unexpected. I was sure that if I made a fifth film, I knew it would be my last, and my life problems all revolved around this certainty. Then one bad day I had a telephone call. Dropped. Telling my wife Keely and friends was torture."
Dame Judi, 70, was speaking to New York gossip columnist Cindy Adams while promoting her latest film, Ladies In Lavender.
The new Casino Royale will be the 21st Bond movie and is scheduled for a November 2006 release.
Ex-Brookside star Jennifer Ellison has been lined up as 007's latest girl, according to recent reports. She has said: "I would love to be a Bond girl. The casting is in July so I am going to go for it.
"I'll throw my weight behind it. I'll throw my body behind it."
