hi Duranmaniac's
--------- courtesy of www.duranitaly.com ----------
an exclusive interview by Fumio Obata ("Careless Memories" Manga cartoon creator) with/for www.duranitaly.com.
duranitaly: How did your career in the word of Manga start and which schools did you attend? Where does your inspiration in drawing come from?
F.O.: I did not attend any special schools to study the art of Japanese comics.
It's just something I grew up with. Although I studied art at Glasgow school
of art and later did my MA at Royal college of art in London, this
commission wasn't to do with any of my art qualifications. The inspiration
for the drawing was just come from inside me. However, it was difficult make
Duran Duran into Manga Characters.
duranitaly: How long are you working with Deep Visual? Did you create any other Manga cartoons for other musicians before the work you did for Duran Duran?
F.O.: I have been working at Deep Visual since late October last year, I started off as a tea boy and an office assistant. Then luckily this opportunity came about. I make my own animation films. However I actually never worked with other musicians or band before Duran Duran in this kind of context, and if there are any more chances to do something like this for others I love to do it.
duranitaly: Where did the idea of a Manga animation for Careless Memories come from? Did you do it everything by yourself or somebody (maybe from the band) gave you some ideas about it? And in which way this ideas came out?
F.O.: The first concept to use Manga for the song came from Gary, the director of
Deep Visual. He is very familiar with Japanese culture and so is Nick
Rhodes. And Gary saw a potential in me more than office work. Duran Duran is
still influential in Japan, and in someway it has been influenced by its
peculiar culture. So the concept suits the band. Anyway It was a natual
development to come up with this sort of idea, and also if there is someone
working so near to you who could do a very different style from the usual
stuff, why not give a try?
However my art works and animations were put together by Andrew Savage who
also works at Deep Visual. He is an expert in broadcasting design and
computer programme such as After Effect.
I own him, and Gary a lot. It couldn't be done without them. Gary chose the
song, produced and directed it. It was purly a team work effort.
duranitaly: We read about Nick Rhodes' involvement in the Manga project. What he did for this project? How was working with him?
F.O.: A lot of action scenes in the film were Nick's idea. I got an impression
that he knows exactly what he wants. Although I did not actually meet him
until the reharsal....He always worked with us via Gary.It was such a fun to
discuss the ideas for the action scenes before the making of the film. There
were about 2 or 3 extra scenes which I really wanted to do but couldn't do
because of the time.It was a real shame for me.
duranitaly: How was the feed back of every single member of the band about the result of your job?
F.O.: Well, they loved it. Hope still like it.....
duranitaly: Have you any plans about a future job with Duran Duran? Or are you working on some other kind of stuffs?
F.O.: I want to do more if the band wants me to. Obviously if there is more time and money I can do 2 or 3 times better than what we have just done. I am constantly working on my new animation film which is very very different.
Also my main job is really an illustrator so I am always working for myself.
duranitaly: Have you been to any of the UK shows? Did you enjoy it?
F.O.: I went to the Wembley gig and really enjoyed it. The whole thing looked a lot better with live music and big screen.
